Project Description

A wooden fence gives you a little privacy as well as adds to the aesthetic appeal of your landscape. But over time, the wood can become a little dingy and dirty, often sporting spots of mildew or mold. Cleaning your fence with household bleach will help brighten the wood, remove mold or mildew stains and restore its attractive appearance.

1
Place plastic drop cloths on both sides of your fence. Cover the plastic with old bed sheets or cloth tarps. The cloth absorbs the runoff and the plastic prevents the bleach solution from soaking through and damaging the vegetation growing around your fence.

2
Pour 1 gallon of water into a large bucket. Add 1 quart of chlorine bleach and stir. By diluting the household bleach, you can remove stains and brighten your fence without changing the natural color of the wood itself.

3
Pour the bleach solution into a handheld garden sprayer. Use a pump sprayer instead of a power sprayer because a power sprayer may be strong enough to make the wood splinter.

4
Wet down your fence with a few good blasts from your garden hose. Working one picket or slat at a time, spray your entire fence liberally with the bleach solution. Start spraying at the top of the fence and work your way down.

5
Allow the bleach solution to stay on the wood for 5 minutes. Thoroughly rinse the fence using your garden hose.

6
Reapply the bleach solution to stubborn mildew or mold stains. Spray just the soiled areas and scrub with a stiff-bristled cleaning brush. Rinse your fence off thoroughly with water from your garden hose.
